Information and Forms > Students news

Congratulations on your interest in becoming a Rotary Youth Exchange Student! You will join thousands of young people every year who set off on what almost every one of them defines as "The BEST year of my life!"

As a Rotary Exchange Student, you will live overseas with one to four host families, attend a local school, and immerse yourself in a totally new culture. You will probably learn a new language, and make life-long friends across the world. It won’t be easy! Every day you will be faced with new challenges that will test your limits and at the same time expand your horizons. But you will learn and grow from these challenges and they will dramatically transform your life.

Every student's experience is unique but the one common theme seen in all successful students is that their year abroad profoundly impacts them. In many cases it defines their lives forever.

You can read about the experience of the returned Students (rebounders)

"Looking back on my time in Austria, it really has been a year that I wouldn’t trade for the world. I’m not saying that it hasn’t been a year that has also been filled with ups and downs, no it’s been far from that, but rather its also been a year filled with excitement, new friendships, and obscure experiences.
It’s actually just been a chance to step out of your normal life, and effectively step into somebody else’s for just a year."

Chris Inglis Austria

Who would have thought I have had some of the best moments of my life with a group of people I hadn’t even met this time last year!!!

"My exchange to Sweden has been the best year of my life so far. It’s been filled with challenges, growth and adventure. I’ve done things I’ve never thought possible; visiting an hotel made solely out of ice, hiking in the alps, watching the northern lights dance and gone to a lunch with the Australian ambassador. And all of this was organized by Rotary. For the past year I’ve been living on the set of a very beautiful fairytale. If I look outside my window right now it’s snowing and there are Christmas trees lined up along the pavement waiting to be sold. I’ve come a long way from my suburban house in Brisbane.
Morgan Biggar Sweden

"I had such an amazing time on Rotary Exchange last year. I have only recently returned, and some say you don’t realise how good something is until it’s gone. Although honestly each time I was invited or involved in something great in Switzerland I knew how lucky I was, and was so appreciative."
Emily Winn Switzerland

Rotary Youth Exchange provides an opportunity of a lifetime for young Australians currently studying Year 9 to 12 to study abroad for the following year.
They’ll spend up to 12 months living and studying in a foreign country, learning a lot about themselves and the culture of their adopted host families.
It’s an amazing, life-changing experience you can give your kids that they will never regret.
